Kirchheimbolanden in the Middle Ages

To make a town out of it – this mandate of the town charter of 1368 was subsequently implemented with vigor. Above all, the building program envisaged an 850 m long city wall with eight defensive towers. Large parts of the western and southern sections of the fortifications are still preserved, as are two defense towers and town gates. Kirchheimbolanden – called Kirchheim in the Middle Ages – thus became the center of a county whose territory comprised barely more than 2,000 inhabitants.

For them, the weekly market provided a supply of everyday goods. It took place in what is now Mozartstraße, which was the city’s main axis with St. Peter’s Church and the “Stadthaus” at the upper end and the castle of the city lord at the lower end.

In Kirchheimbolanden, the medieval urbanization that took place in around 2,000 small German towns in the 14th century can be experienced.
