19th Century
Kirchheimbolanden 1801-1900
Formerly a residence, now a small town – a visitor noted about Kirchheimbolanden in 1816. How much this changed the town’s character is particularly evident in the palace garden. For the contrast between the princely Baroque park and its subsequent transformation into an English garden could hardly be greater. But the palace also received a new look: only the east wing remained, and it was modernized with an additional story in 1862. Most notably, numerous state buildings were constructed in the town during the 19th century: including the district court, revenue office, junior high school, and train station, all indicating Bavarian state affiliation.
How dissatisfied people were with Bavarian rule in 1849 can be explored through another city route: the Freischaren City Tour (stations, people, and events of the 1848/49 Revolution). In Kirchheimbolanden, the social and economic modernization in one of the twelve Palatinate-Bavarian district towns of the 19th century can thus be experienced.
