19th century

From residence to country town

Formerly a residence, now a small country town – a visitor wrote about Kirchheimbolanden in 1816. The extent to which this changed the character of the town is particularly evident in the palace gardens. The contrast between the princely baroque park and the subsequent transformation into an English garden could hardly be greater. But the palace was also given a new look: Only the east wing had been preserved and this was extended in 1862 in keeping with the times. Above all, however, the 19th century saw the construction of numerous state buildings in the town, including the district court, rent office, grammar school and railroad station, all of which were evidence of Bavarian statehood.

However, another city route reveals just how dissatisfied people were with Bavarian rule in 1849: the Freischaren-Stadt-Tour (stations, people and events of the 1848/49 revolution).

In Kirchheimbolanden, the social and economic modernization of one of the twelve Palatinate-Bavarian district towns in the 19th century can be experienced.
