37.1 Medieval-early modern administrative apparatus

The late Middle Ages and the early modern period were an era of administrative expansion and consolidation. In Kirchheimbolanden, too, the Amtmänner, Amtsschreiber and Amtskeller personified this development.

The bailiff represented the “lordship” vis-à-vis the subjects, the office clerk was responsible for the cash management and the responsibility of the office cellarer included the collection of the “Gefälle” (taxes) so that the sovereign rights were not lost.

The late medieval-early modern administrative apparatus thus became a driver of administrative consolidation.
