Church of Our Lady

“Todten Church”

The church, named unser frawen kirchen in 1431, was located outside the medieval city walls, similar to the Liebfrauenkirche in Worms. In Kirchheimbolanden, however, it was merely a chapel.

The Church of Our Lady, built in its place in 1731/32, is recorded in 1773: The so-called Todten-Kirche (Church of the Dead), also built from manorial funds, is granted to the Catholic congregation for use to the extent that the Lutheran congregation can hold their funeral meetings in it at all times. The cemetery, which was used until the 19th century, was located around the church.

And if the Kirchheimbolander Fürstenhof had Catholic guests, they attended church services in the Liebfrauenkirche – as did Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1778.
