Castle Square
Small residence
Baroque residential towns were characterized by a distinct court area.
The palace was the focal point, as the prince saw himself as the center of his state. His court therefore also included other functional buildings, in particular a stable (horse stables) and a coach house. In Kirchheimbolanden, these two buildings flanked the west and south-west sides of the palace square.
The palace church [Standort 30], gardens (palace garden and terraced garden) [locations 33, 34], orangery [Standort 41], the ballroom [Standort 25] and the princely court grounds also belonged to the palace.
Kirchheimbolanden was thus one of the “small residences” of the 18th century – the courts of small territories (the entire Principality of Nassau-Weilburg had a population of around 35,000).
